Motor insurance for foreign-registered vehicles
What to clarify before travelling to Russia with a vehicle registered outside Russia.
OSAGO is Russian motor third-party liability insurance. Registration country and use help frame a question about a particular vehicle or combination.
Start with the registration country, the vehicle’s exact class and any existing cover. The page language and driver’s nationality are not substitutes. The guides below help prepare a question; they do not confirm that a policy can be issued.
Guides by scenario
01Passenger car
- Check the exact class in the registration document; appearance alone is not enough.
- Clarify use: a private trip, taxi work and other business use are not interchangeable.
- If towing a trailer, note its type and registration separately from the car.
02Commercial vehicle
- Identify the actual vehicle: van, passenger car, truck or bus.
- Describe the activity: cargo delivery, passenger transport, rental or another use.
- Check whether the owner is an individual or a company; do not choose a tariff based on the word “commercial”.
03Truck
- Find the exact class and maximum permitted mass in the registration document.
- Describe the load and purpose: personal belongings or commercial cargo.
- If towing a trailer, prepare its details and ask how the combination is reflected in the cover.
04Tractor unit with a semi-trailer
- Prepare registration details for the tractor and semi-trailer as two linked units.
- Clarify registration countries, ownership and use for each unit; these may differ.
- Ask how operation as a combination is covered; do not assume one or two contracts in advance.
05Trailer or semi-trailer
- Identify the towing vehicle: passenger car, truck or tractor unit.
- Find the trailer’s own type, registration and purpose.
- Check how towing is addressed in the towing vehicle’s contract; do not buy a separate policy just because it is called a trailer.
06Bus
- Find the class and number of passenger seats in the registration document.
- Describe the use: a private trip, a tour group or scheduled transport.
- Ask separately about passenger-transport insurance; this section does not check every carrier obligation.
07Vehicle type not yet known
- Read the class in the registration document instead of guessing from the nearest icon.
- Describe what the vehicle will be used for on the trip.
- List trailers or other units separately; leave missing details as unknown.
What to prepare
Preparation for a conversation with an insurer, not a complete list of required documents.
- Find the registration country for each vehicle in its document, rather than using the owner’s nationality.
- Clarify the intended dates of use in Russia; say explicitly if they are not yet known.
- If you have a policy, read its territory, dates and conditions for this particular vehicle.
Already have a policy?
Check territory, dates and exclusions in the contract. A policy name alone does not confirm cover for your trip.
